Empowering Philadelphia youth to save lives

Students Socializing

Our mission

Philadelphia Youth Naloxone Education (PYNE) is dedicated to equipping Philadelphia youth with the life-saving knowledge and confidence to respond to opioid overdoses in their community. In partnership with the School District of Philadelphia (SDP), PYNE delivers a uniquely youth-tailored curriculum, which addresses the gap in Philadelphia youth education on the opioid epidemic and overdose response.

SDP Health and Physical Education teachers are trained to deliver curriculum to their classrooms. Modules are designed to educate students in grades six through 12 on the epidemic and instruct on administering naloxone (commonly known as Narcan).

Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. Naloxone is widely available as a nasal spray, and Narcan is a common intranasal brand of naloxone. Administering naloxone is straightforward and does not cause adverse health effects for the recipient, with the exception of irritation. If someone demonstrates the signs of an overdose, even if the cause is unclear, it is recommended to always use naloxone and then call 911.
